Mutant proteins could treat blocked arteries

A researcher at Florida State University College of Medicine has been studying mutant human proteins that could spur the body to develop new blood vessels, offering a radical new approach to treating blocked arteries. Michael Blaber and a team of researchers have been developing artificial proteins that offer the kind of stability needed for a new therapy. Blaber says that private outfits have demonstrated an interest in the commercial development of his work. A therapy of this nature would likely be tested first on people with no other treatment options left.

"This research offers the potential to treat people who currently are being sent home to die,'' Blaber said. "We've tested a group of mutants in the laboratory with unusual properties of increased stability and activities--good properties. In some cases it was unexpected, but the results are very promising.''
