Scientists from Emory University School of Medicine and Yerkes National Primate Research Center have developed a new "disease in a dish" model using induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells to help assess potential therapies for Huntington's disease. Currently, available cell models do not present certain key features of the disease, a neurodegenerative genetic disorder that has no cure. But the new iPS-derived neural cell model, described in Stem Cell Reports, developed intracellular and intranuclear aggregates of the mutant huntingtin protein, a classic sign of Huntington's pathology, as well as an increased sensitivity to oxidative stress.
