Biomedical researchers have mounted an advertising campaign to support the use of animals in their research work, and animal rights activists responded by targeting a University of Minnesota scientist for retaliation.
University police increased patrols around the house of Professor Dick Bianco after the website NegotiationIsOver published his photo and a story saying that "...we should not be surprised when the unconscionable violence inflicted upon animals is justifiably visited upon their tormentors."
"The university police are patrolling around my house now," said Bianco, an associate professor of surgery and director of experimental surgery. "The FBI is involved to assess the threat."
The campaign backing animal research includes billboards proclaiming: "Ever had leprosy? Thanks to animal research, you won't."
