For the first time, scientists have used gene therapy as an anti-aging treatment and generated some success in mice. Researchers at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre in Madrid say they used a single gene therapy treatment on 1-and 2-year-old mice, and they lived 24% longer on average as a result, without developing tumors as previous failed efforts have. Specifically, the rodents received a DNA-modified virus infused with telomerase enzymes. As the researchers explain, the enzymes repaired chromosomes called telomeres, which helped with the anti-aging results. Details are published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine. Release
