Following an IOM study which was highly critical of using chimpanzees in medical research, the NIH is retiring 110 of its lab chimps. And NIH chief Francis Collins says that it's a great start in eliminating the use of chimps in medical research altogether. Animal rights groups also voiced their support of the move. The NIH owns about half of the 1,000 chimps that are used for research purposes in the U.S. The retiring chimps have been housed at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana but are now headed for new digs in San Antonio and a sanctuary called "Chimp Haven."
