Welsh government refuses to cover costs associated with faulty PIP breast implants

Global fallout from the Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) breast implant scandal continues, as the Welsh government refused to pay £1.2 million to replace faulty implants in women. According to a BBC report, some 1,000 Welsh women are pursuing compensation claims to cover costs associated with toxic implants made by the defunct French implant company. The scandal sparked a regulatory movement in Europe, with lawmakers calling for stricter inspection and manufacturing of medical devices. However, the process has been slow: In December 2013, five PIP executives were sentenced for concealing the ingredients used to make the company's silicone implants. One year earlier, the French government recommended that 30,000 women have their implants removed following ruptures--almost three years after investigators first reported problems. Report
