Chaired by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), the Senate Finance Committee will soon hold hearings on the 2.3% medical device excise tax. It is a key funding mechanism of the Affordable Care Act. In an email, Jay Khosla, a staffer for Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) wrote that "after more than 5 years since its inception, it is important for all of us to examine this bipartisan concern in a deliberate manner." Sen. Hatch's proposal to repeal the medical device tax has 34 co-sponsors, 5 of whom are Democrats. A competing Democratic proposal in the Senate to repeal the tax and pay for it by closing tax loopholes has no co-sponsors. More
