Researchers create 'sponge' to soak up chemotherapy drugs before widespread circulation

At the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, researchers are developing and testing a new device to soak up chemotherapy drugs before they can circulate widely throughout the body. The expectation is that this technology could enable higher doses of chemotherapy drugs, but also limit off-target effects in other organs such as the heart and the eyes. The polymer-based drug capture device attracts and captures molecules by their electric charge, allowing other kinds of molecules to flow through. In a test with doxorubicin, which is used to treat liver cancer, researchers were able to absorb 90% of the drug in 25 to 30 minutes in the lab. More
