Startup ClarVista Medical expects to use a newly gleaned $14.5 million financing to get a CE mark for its Harmoni modular intraocular lens system. The design of the cataract IOL is intended to make it easier for surgeons to correctly position the lens, as well as to make it simpler to exchange the optical component when required because of a dual-component structure.
In addition, the Harmoni design is intended to prevent a common cataract lens complication, posterior capsular opacification. PCO involves the proliferation, migration and abnormal differentiation of residual lens epithelial cells and fibers in the capsular bag.
"The multiple barriers to posterior capsular opacification (PCO) present in the base component resulted in superior prevention of PCO in preclinical studies done at the Moran Eye Center," said intraocular lens inventor Dr. Malik Kahook in a December interview with the Ophthalmology Times. "The Harmoni IOL system is positioning itself as the life cycle lens for all patients with the ability to address refractive needs from pediatrics to adulthood and promises to give surgeons flexibility to target optimum vision as no lens has in the past."
ClarVista is based in Aliso Viejo, CA, and got a Series A round in 2012 after it spun out of medical device incubator Prospex Medical. New Enterprise Associates is an existing investor; the new SEC filing also lists Robert Balch of the Cycad Group and Cynthia Yee of Windham Venture Partners.
