Living cartilage used to make tracheal implant via standard 3-D printer

Researchers at the The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have shaped living cells into a cartilage implant for tracheal repair or replacement using a modified MakerBot 3-D printer. This is the first time a regular MakerBot printer was used to 3-D print custom tracheal scaffolding, according to the researchers. The Feinstein Institute scientists were already able to make cartilage from a mixture of cells called chondrocytes, nutrients to feed them, and collagen, which holds it all together.
