Fresh off the sales of its interventional device unit to Boston Scientific ($BSX), Bayer Healthcare is showing renewed interest in med tech via its startup accelerator.
All 5 of the startups selected for funding, out of 70 applicants, sell a device or healthcare app. In return for giving Bayer up to a 10% equity stake in themselves, the companies receive €50,000 from the company's Grants4Apps accelerator and free office space in its Berlin headquarters, according to Venture Village.
The five companies, all European, are:

Cortrium: A spin off of Nokia, this Danish company sells a wearable biosensor and electrocardiogram that measures metrics like heart rate, respiratory rate and skin surface temperature. The device has an associated app and cloud-based service that enables remote tracking of the vital signs.

- PharmaAssistant: This Portuguese company makes the SmartBottles medical container that notifies patients' smartphones when it is time to take their medicines.
- Parica: This early-stage German company is developing a contactless detection system to analyze customers' biometrics and give them feedback about their health.
- FabUlyzer: Maker of an app and biosensor that measures fat burned following exercise based on customers' breath.
- Qompium: This German company makes the Cardimoni app to measure heart rate and regularity via smartphone.
According to Venture Village the companies will make a presentation documenting their progress in December.
