Obsidian to Demonstrate Large-Data Migration at BIO-IT World in Boston

Big Science Often Needs Big Data Transport – Longbow Delivers it!

BIO-IT World Conference and Expo

BOSTON--()--Obsidian Strategics is proud to introduce a new member of the Obsidian LongbowTM product family to researchers and IT professionals attending this year's BIO-IT World Conference and Expo at Boston's World Trade Center, April 9-11.

We continue to hear about the challenges faced in handling the 'data explosion' – the increase in data generation/collection as well as increases in data complexity, size and volume. Legacy systems and dated infrastructure lack data capacity, or the ability to ingest, transport, store and analyze large-data.

The Obsidian Longbow™ was originally developed in support of a Department of Defense (DoD) project to address the military's requirement to securely transport large-data acquired from Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets. Longbows are facilitating highly-classified large-data dissemination efforts 24-7-365. The paired devices enable the DoD and Intelligence Agencies to move large-data over very long distances between collection, analysis and storage facilities at high-speed and totally intact, with encryption and authentication.

With emphasis on our expertise and passion for supporting bioinformatics demands, we are pleased to enter our Longbow C400 into the BIO-IT New Product Showcase. First revealed at Supercomputing 2012 in Salt Lake City this past November, the C400 is the world's first QDR device to extend the reach of an InfiniBand fabric – allowing 40Gbits/s feeds to traverse existing optical networks at distances up to 80 km (50 miles).

Where life science researchers struggle with data movement over distance, Obsidian Longbows can help provide a unique and affordable solution. For example, when sequencing a patient's genome, the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix, AZ generates many Terabytes of data. However, their wet lab is several miles from their compute resources. Enter a pair of Longbows to seamlessly extend the InfiniBand fabric and the link is now delivering 98% of theoretical bandwidth even with the integrated encryption enabled - moving nearly 1 GB/s between the two remote sites.

Our collaboration with TGen is just a sample of the potential impact Longbows offer the Big Science realm as our products take the intrinsic, high-performance characteristics of InfiniBand outside the traditional 'four walls' of a compute or storage facility to span metro, regional or global networks.

To meet our team, receive a C400 demonstration, or to further explore how Obsidian products might serve your large-data needs, please visit the team at Booth #424.

About Obsidian Strategics

Obsidian Strategics™ is the developer of Longbow™, a series of InfiniBand products featuring range extension, routing and encryption. Longbow technology allows an InfiniBand fabric, normally a short-range network used in high-performance computing, to be extended via optical fiber over varying distances. Longbow connects across Campus, Metro or Global networks to enable unparalleled real-time backup over long-distance, high-bandwidth video transmission and efficient movement of large data sets to compute and storage resources. www.obsidianstrategics.com.
