C&L: St. Paul taps Henry Smith as CEO

St. Paul Pharmaceutical -- a pending merger partner with WENR -- has named Henry Smith, Ph.D., as CEO. He has more than 30 years of experience, including time as president and CEO of Allied Biotechnology International and as COO of Specialty Medical Industries.

Zelos Therapeutics announced the departure of CEO Robert "Duffy" DuFresne. DuFresne has served as the company's CEO and as a member of the company's board of directors since March 2003.

Oragenics named Robert Zahradnik president and CEO. Dr. Zahradnik had been the acting president and CEO since July 2005 when he replaced Mento A. Soponis, who had retired from the post.

Steven Nichtberger, M.D., has been hired as president and CEO of Tengion. Prior to joining Tengion, Dr. Nichtberger held a number of senior management positions at Merck. The rest of the executive team includes Don Bergmann, Ph.D., senior vice president, technical operations; Tim Bertram, D.V.M., Ph.D., vice president, science and technology; Paul Chang, M.D., chief medical officer, vice president, regulatory affairs and clinical development; George Landau, vice president, business development and marketing planning; and Gary Sender, CFO, vice president finance and administration.

Endovasc has appointed Clarice Motter, CPA, as its new CFO. Endovasc's current CFO, Dwight Cantrell, will be transitioning to the role of chief operations officer and remains a member of the company's board of directors.

Nastech Pharmaceutical announced that CFO Gregory Weaver has resigned to pursue other opportunities. Philip Ranker, currently vice president of finance for Nastech, will serve as interim CFO and corporate secretary.

Nabi Biopharmaceuticals has named Edwin Klumper, M.D., vice president, sales and marketing, Europe, Nabi Biopharmaceuticals Europe; and Chris Tovey has been named country manager, Nabi Biopharmaceuticals UK.

MedImmune has promoted Kevin Rooney to vice president, oncology sales and marketing. In addition, the company has added Kevin McNelly as vice president, supply chain operations; James Miller as vice president, international, business analysis and new products; and Mauricio Vargas-Cortes, Ph.D., as vice president, project management.

Acologix has appointed Sarbani Bhaduri, M.D., as vice president of medical affairs. Prior to joining Acologix, Dr. Bhaduri was the Nephrology Franchise Medical Director for Ortho Biotech, a subsidiary company of Johnson & Johnson.

Novavax has hired Robert W. Lee, Ph.D., to the position of vice president, pharmaceutical development. Most recently he served as vice president of product development for Lyotropic Therapeutics.

Javelin Pharmaceuticals has named Curtis Wright, IV, M.D., M.P.H., as vice president of risk management and regulatory affairs. Dr. Wright, a renowned authority on clinical risk assessment, served at the FDA from 1989 to 1997 in its Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Dr. Suhail Nurbhai has been named vice president, clinical development at Dynogen Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Nurbhai joins Dynogen from Pfizer.

Inyx announced that Stephen Beckman has joined the company in the new position of vice president sales and marketing and commercial development. Prior to joining Inyx, Beckman served as a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry.

BIOCOM named Mark Cafferty as its director of workforce development. Cafferty will lead BIOCOM's efforts in implementing a $2.5 million employment and training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

KBI BioPharma has expanded its management team by naming Khurshid Iqbal as its new vice president for biopharmaceutical development. He is a former executive at R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Hoffman-La Roche and E.R. Squibb & Sons. His most recent position was senior vice president at West Pharmaceuticals.

Velcura Therapeutics has promoted Daniel Chagnovich, Ph.D., to director of research operations.

Christopher Dowd has joined Esprit Pharma as senior vice president, sales. Dowd comes to Esprit from Pfizer, where he served in its world headquarters as vice president, specialty sales.

Acadia Pharmaceuticals has elected Michael T. Borer to its board of directors.

Cambridge Antibody Technology named Dr. John Brown as a non-executive director.

Cadence Pharmaceuticals has appointed James C. Blair, Ph.D., and William R. LaRue to its board of directors.

Arrow International elected Anna M. Seal as a director of the company.
