FDA updates IT after GAO lashing

The FDA is making progress toward modernizing its information technology under the leadership of Eric Perakslis, the agency's chief information officer and chief scientist for informatics. Perakslis, stressing that there was still work to be done to modernize IT, provided a progress update on his group's efforts on the agency's blog, about 7 months after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) panned aspects of the FDA's IT modernization push. Also, Perakslis wrote last week that his department has "completed 20 projects in very short time in support of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA), signed into law by President Obama in July 2012. Many of these projects strengthen the process of reviewing and approving important new medical products, while making that process more transparent to the tax-paying public." Blog
