Shares of Vivus surged on the news that subjects in a Phase II trial of its weight loss drug shed a significantly larger amount of weight compared to a placebo. Participants taking Gnexas lost an average of 25.1 pounds in 24 weeks compared to 4.8 pounds in the placebo group. The study included 149 women and 41 men with an average age of 40. All of them were obese and all were told to reduce their diet by 500 calories a day.
