June 25, 2012 USA(Realpharmacyrx.us): One of the most common painkiller medications that contain hydrocodone or its combinations such as the drug Vicodin are supposed to face strict U.S oversight, due to the repeated information about the misuse and addiction to the drug. The data pertaining to hydrocodone and its restrictions have been recently reported by the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
It is a known fact that painkiller medications containing hydrocodone that are generally available through prescription are the second leading cause of drug abuse in the U.S, only after marijuana.
As per the data available through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, it has been found that hydrocodone-allied emergency hospital visits are higher than that of the doubled value found during 2004 – 2010.
The main reason for this increase in abuse of hydrocodone associated medications is the fact that these medications are easily accessible by the consumers in the form of combination drugs such as the pain reliever drug called Vicodin.
The drug Vicodin is available in conjugation with acetaminophen and thus is associated with liberal drug regulations as compared to the pure hydrocodone containing drug.
Hence, the DEA is trying to make some alterations with respect to the classification of the drug in the category that requires the approval of health care professionals by the patients. This may make it a mandatory approach for patients to consult the doctors for the medications occurring in the form of combination with hydrocodone.
Barbara Carreno, a member of the Drug Enforcement Administration said that the major cause for implication of such a drastic step with respect to hydrocodone is attributed to its increasing abuse. This measure can also be associated with an increase in the penalties for drug trafficking.
