CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Tokai Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing new treatments for prostate cancer and other hormonally driven diseases, today announced the appointment of Khalid Mamlouk, Pharm.D. as vice president, head of medical affairs. Dr. Mamlouk joins the company from Algeta, bringing significant experience in oncology medical affairs, most recently with a focus in prostate cancer.

Dr. Mamlouk most recently served as head of medical affairs at Algeta until the company's acquisition by Bayer. In this role, he was a member of the US management team responsible for the development, implementation, and management of pre-, peri- and post-launch medical affairs activities for Xofigo® in the US. Prior to Algeta, Dr. Mamlouk was senior director of scientific relations and marketing at Dendreon Corporation where he worked on commercial activities for Provenge®, the company's oncology and urology business. Dr. Mamlouk also served in roles of increasing responsibility over seven years at Genzyme Corporation, culminating in his role as director, medical education and communications where he developed and implemented global medical education plans and strategies for the Genzyme Transplant Oncology portfolio. Dr. Mamlouk was also a senior medical science liasion in the medical affairs group at Genentech Bio-Oncology supporting the clinical and scientific strategy for Avastin®. Before joining industry, Dr. Mamlouk spent 10 years as a board certified oncology pharmacist in the retail and academic settings. He began his career as a clinical pharmacy specialist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas at the Blood and Marrow Transplant program. He received his M.S. in pharmacy and pharmaceutical chemistry from University of Damascus School of Pharmacy, Damascus, Syria and his doctor of pharmacy from the University of Florida.
About Galeterone
Galeterone (TOK-001), is a multi-targeted, oral small molecule drug being developed for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) that acts by actively disrupting androgen receptor (AR) signaling, the key driver of CRPC, via multiple mechanisms of action. Galeterone combines the mechanisms of action of CYP17 inhibition and androgen receptor antagonism with an additional mechanism of androgen receptor degradation. Current available therapies disrupt the pathway at a single point. To our knowledge, galeterone is the only drug candidate in clinical trials that disrupts the pathway at multiple points. Galeterone does not bind to GABAa, eliminating the class effect risk of seizures associated with GABAa, and exhibits a selective CYP17 lyase over hydroxylase inhibition profile that does not lead to mineralocorticoid excess, and therefore, does not require concomitant dosing with prednisone.
