Scientists at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas have identified a gene that may play a role in extending lives and preventing age-related illnesses. The discovery was triggered by research into a genetic mutation that caused advanced signs of aging. Scientists took an undamaged, overactive version of the gene and created genetically engineered mice that lived 20 percent to 30 percent longer than average. According to their research, the gene -- dubbed Klotho -- may provide important insight into the molecular role in aging. Analysts say that the work may have important implications in the search for therapies that extend people's lives.
