Pfizer cancels NicOx drug trial in Asia

In a blow to NicOx, Pfizer decided not to launch a Phase III program for PF-03187207 in Asia. A phase II study compared PF-03187207 to Pfizer's bestselling drug Xalatan and enrolled 112 Japanese patients with  glaucoma or ocular hypertension. While the drug showed signs of activity, it didn't meet its primary endpoint. In May Pfizer chose not to launch Phase III trials of the drug in the U.S., following similar results. According to a statement, NicOx and Pfizer are currently discussing what course to take with the drug in the future.

"NicOx and Pfizer are in active discussions regarding the worldwide rights to PF-03187207, which we believe has a certain commercial potential which should be realized, said Michele Garufi, Chairman and CEO of NicOx. "We are also pleased by the progress that has been made in the research program focused on diabetic retinopathy, where we hope a lead compound will be selected in the first half of next year."
