Plagued by low sales, NitroMed has decided to cut its 120-member dedicated sales force for BiDil and replace it with a specialized group of cardiovascular experts who will push the use of the heart failure drug for African-Americans. NitroMed says the move will cut marketing costs as they push for the development of BiDil XR.
"Sales of BiDil have grown steadily, but they are not growing at a rate that supports the present sales structure," says NitroMed CEO Jerry Karabelas. "Our revised strategy integrates several different disciplines to positively impact the perception and utilization of BiDil by health plans, key institutions and regional heart failure specialists--those who make therapeutic decisions and influence the broader base of prescribers."
