Microsoft creates BioIT alliance

Microsoft has taken a lead role in creating the BioIT alliance, a confederation of biotech, technology and pharmaceutical companies that will focus on improving the link between technology and science in creating a new generation of personalized medicines. The group, which also includes Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard, will initially work on a new data management system for drug research. Multidisciplinary teams of experts will work on the new systems together.

"By bringing together people from innovative life sciences organizations that span the biomedical industry, the BioIT Alliance will play an important role in the development of solutions that transform today's data into knowledge and improve the quality of millions of lives," said Bill Gates, who has been pouring billions of his own dollars into new drug research.
