Despite hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising, the $2.5 billion market for impotence drugs is slipping. Last October, sales of the three big ED drugs--Viagra, Levitra and Cialis--slid 10 percent. Analysts say that recent reports of harmful side effects may have blunted sales. Others speculate that the category demonstrates the inability of consumer advertising to drive sales ever higher. Still more note that no matter what, a large concentration of men who suffer from impotence simply are not taking a drug that is effective 70 percent of the time.
