Mass. fills in the details on $1B biotech program

Dozens of life sciences figures in Massachusetts will be closeted with Gov. Deval Patrick as they begin the task of identifying which groups will be eligible to receive the $1 billion in biotech funding he proffered at the recent gathering of BIO in Boston. The morning meeting tomorrow will bring together officials from the state's universities as well as Vertex, Genzyme and other developers. Patrick caused quite a stir at BIO with his proposal to funnel $100 million a year into biotechnology over the next 10 years. And some government watchdogs say they'll be watching closely to see if any conflicts emerge.
