M*Modal Introduces Structured Radiology Report Templates Based on RSNA Radiology Reporting Initiative
Library of 70 templates to be integrated into M*Modal's Speech UnderstandingTM platform.
Pittsburgh, PA (Vocus/PRWEB) November 28, 2010

M*Modal announced today the introduction of the first representation faithful to the HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) structured document standard of radiology report templates based on the library created by the development committees participating in the radiology reporting initiative of the Radiologic Association of North America (RSNA®). This addition augments the ability of M*Modal's radiology users to document using their own macros and templates while fostering the industry drive toward standardization and best practices for high quality documentation.

M*Modal has been converting the almost 70 RSNA-based templates into the document model format understood by the company's Speech UnderstandingTM platform, making them immediately selectable by the radiologist from an onscreen menu. Once chosen, a structured template's data fields can be rapidly navigated and filled in via speech recognition, with visual prompts for required information choices.

In another industry first, M*Modal has also mapped the template data fields to ontologies such as RadLexTM so that structured, encoded data is created automatically and semantic interoperability is achieved - another key objective of the RSNA initiative. M*Modal's platform also has the capability to map these fields to other ontologies that customers may want.

Reflecting the fact that the radiology report is the core output for radiologists, RSNA's initiatives in this area have focused on driving documentation quality through clear and consistent standard report formats and content. The organization also seeks to promote research and education through information capture in a "uniform, easily extracted format that facilitates clinical, transactional and health services research."

M*Modal Speech UnderstandingTM is a single platform that combines the company's robust, proprietary conversational speech recognition, natural language understanding, and semantic inference technologies to generate meaningful structured information from the wealth of narrative dictated reports produced in healthcare organizations. The technology is integrated with leading PACS and RIS Systems for high-performance radiology reporting.

As an integral part of the Speech UnderstandingTM platform, the new structured radiology templates are available for use in M*Modal's radiology partners' products. The templates will be demonstrated in M*Modal's booth #9150 at the RSNA annual meeting in Chicago, Nov. 28 - Dec. 2, 2010.
