Lincoln Pharmaceuticals wins patent for a novel NDDS

Lincoln Pharmaceuticals Limited (LPL), Ahmedabad based world class pharmaceutical company recognized for manufacturing top class quality Health Care Products wins Patent for a novel Nasal Drug Delivery System (NDDS) in India. This novel NDDS helps in arresting or preventing vomiting and nausea, through a new Nasal Spray system that could particularly help in chemotherapy induced vomiting. Presently in India anti-vomiting treatments are available in the conventional form of tablet and injection which take longer time to bring relief. But now through LPL's new Nasal Drug Delivery System, the patient can get immediate relief. LPL becomes the first company in India to introduce an anti-vomiting treatment in the form of a Nasal spray pump.

Clinical tests on the efficacy and tolerability of the new nasal spray formulation of Ondansetron Hydrochloride (the molecule that serves as an agent that prevents or arrests vomiting) has proven its ability to prevent vomiting and nausea. As the nasal cavity is covered by a thin mucosa which is well vascularised, the Ondansetron Hydrochloride molecule can quickly be transferred across the single epithelial cell layer directly into the blood stream without first-pass hepatic and intestinal metabolism. Positive effects can be reached within 5 minutes for smaller drug molecules. Nasal administration can therefore be used as an alternative to oral administration if instant relief is desired or if the oral drug is extensively degraded in the gut or liver.

Speaking on winning the Patent for the novel NDDS in India, Mr Mahendra G Patel, MD, Lincoln Pharmaceutical Ltd, said, "It has been our constant endeavor to provide quality Healthcare products to our consumers. The new nasal pump spray offering takes us closer to providing customers with improved drugs for better treatment. Vomiting and nausea is a common problem which causes patients a great deal of discomfort and weakness. We wanted to provide immediate relief to people suffering from this problem. Now after winning a Patent for the novel NDDS for vomiting, we will be able to help patients experience relief within a few minutes." He further added, "The use of nasal spray represents an effective, safe, easily managed and cost-effective treatment with fewer side effects. The product will hit the markets in India in the next 2-3 months and we plan to market this product internationally as well."

Technology platform: Nasal Spray
Nasal spray technology comprise of concentrated solution containing API, a pump-actuator assembly and a suitable container. The actuator is designed to deliver metered dose/volume in a single stroke. The actuator is validated for its repeatability and accuracy to deliver metered volume of liquid containing API.

Advantages of Nasal Delivery
Ø       Lower doses
Ø       More rapid attainment of therapeutic blood levels
Ø       Quicker onset of pharmacological activity
Ø       Fewer side effects
Ø       Increased patient compliance
Ø       Cost-effectiveness
Ø       Improved bioavailability
Ø       Avoidance of First pass metabolism

Nasal administration can be used to deliver drugs for either local or systemic effect. Nasal administration is primarily suitable for potent drugs since only a limited volume can be sprayed into the nasal cavity.
