Human Genome Sciences shares jumped 20 percent in premarket trading on positive data from a four-year mid-stage trial of its lupus drug candidate. Benlysta (belimumab) is designed for the treatment of a type of lupus known as serologically active systemic lupus erythematosus. Trial results showed that, when used in combination with standard medical care, Benlysta stabilized disease activity and decreased the frequency of flare-ups of symptoms associated with the disease. Researchers recorded a decrease from 62 percent to 16 percent in the overall frequency of SLE disease flare-ups, and the frequency of severe disease flare-ups dropped from 8 percent to 1 percent, the company said in a statement.
Human Genome Sciences said the data also showed a favorable safety profile, with reports of adverse events, malignancies or serious infections decreasing or stabilizing over time. HGS and partner GlaxoSmithKline said they expect Phase III results later this year.
