A study of head-to-head drug trials for psychiatric therapies found that the sponsoring company almost always ended up with the pharmaceutical that came out on top. In most cases, experts note, the head-to-head trials are being designed to burnish the reputation of expensive branded drugs. In one government-funded head-to-head study, less expensive generic medications turned out to be the most effective therapies. Psychiatric drug studies typically measure more loosely defined signs of symptomatic relief, making the trials easier to manipulate.
