Genzyme researchers tout latest results for Campath against MS

Genzyme and Schering AG of Germany say that an interim analysis of their cancer drug Campath in a mid-stage trial for multiple sclerosis demonstrated a 75 percent reduction in relapse compared to interferon. But drug research has been suspended while the companies examine several adverse reactions experienced by patients taking the drug. The researchers are preparing protocols for a late-stage trial.

Out of 334 patients in Phase II, three taking high doses of Campath experienced abnormal bleeding and low platelet counts. Researchers say they will stop giving patients the high doses, saying there was no evident benefit from the increased strength. Campath is approved for treating leukemia.
