Score some big points for sanity in the Senate. Confronted by an unthinking and harmful head-in-the-sand approach to embryonic stem cell research in the White House, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) has decided to back federal support for the science. The fact that he is doing so while trying to line up the support of religious conservatives for an apparent White House bid of his own underscores a dramatic conversion that could pull the entire Senate right along with him. Embryonic stem cell research is showing more and more promise every day. The federal government should be leading here, not obstructing. - John Carroll
