Berlin High In Global Rankings
Business Facilities Magazine Ranks Berlin/Brandenburg #3 in ‘Emerging Biotech Hubs' and For Second Year In A Row, Ranks Berlin #1 in ‘Clean Tech Centers of Excellence'

BERLIN, GERMANY - September 12, 2011 -  On a mission to be a leader in clean technology and biotech, the region of Berlin has been cited again by global location magazine, Business Facilities, as among the world's best cities for these key industries.

Business Facilities Magazine's Seventh Annual International Rankings Report recently released, reflects evolving trends in economic development, site selection, and emerging growth sectors around the world.  In its finding, Berlin ranked No. 1 for the second year in a row in ‘International Clean Tech Center of Excellence', and the Berlin/Brandenburg region ranked No. 3 in ‘Emerging Biotech Hubs', behind Hessen, Germany (No. 1) and Bavaria, Germany (No. 2).  Germany as a whole ranked No. 1 in ‘Logistics Leaders' for the second year in a row, No. 4 in ‘Renewable Energy Investment Leaders' and
No. 5 in ‘Global Competitiveness'.

The magazine noted that ‘several regions in Germany maintained their unquestioned leadership in several of our Global Rankings categories this year', and that ‘terms like ‘network' and ‘cluster' are far more than buzzwords in the German state of Bavaria, where companies, schools, associations and political groups have been working together to grow the economy of Germany's largest state.'

The Berlin region boasts extensive research and education networks, a highly qualified workforce, and inexpensive rental/property rates.  Companies can receive reimbursement grants of up to 35% - 50% of their investments.

With the development of Europe's most innovative and technologically advanced Clean Tech Business Park ongoing and the recent launch of eMo, an agency to help nurture and network "electromobility" activities, Berlin's efforts are paying off. And, today, 450 biotech and medtech companies, and 30 pharmaceuticals have offices there, including Pfizer's German headquarters and Bayer Healthcare's European headquarters.

"Our commitment to diversity and innovation in a research-driven environment is key to ensure success for the future in these two very important global industries," said René Gurka, managing director of Berlin Partner, the economic development agency for Berlin.  "Berlin is extremely gratified to be ranked so high among these respected industry leaders."
