Avastin gains acceptance as off-label treatment for macular degeneration

Genentech's experimental Lucentis may eventually find itself in competition with another therapy from the same company. Doctors have begun using Avastin as an off-label treatment for age-related macular degeneration. "It's gained enormous traction, and most of that is by word of mouth," Dr. Philip J. Rosenfeld, associate professor of ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami, told The New York Times.
