Development chief outlines strategy at Genentech

Genentech's Susan Desmond-Hellmann, president of product development, outlined the biotech giant's development strategy to a group at the Goldman Sachs healthcare conference. In addition to testing new uses of its cancer blockbusters, Desmond-Hellman says the company will push hard to advance new therapies in the neuroscience and infectious disease areas. Genentech also has 14 new molecules in development for cancer indications.

The research chief also told the group that the blockbuster drugs of the past may never be duplicated. Future drugs will cater to a smaller, better defined group of patients. "The days of big cholesterol-lowering drugs for millions of people may be behind us."

CEO pay: Who makes what in Big Biotech?

What do you get when you make it to the top of of Big Biotech's biggest companies? Millions in compensation, for one thing. But although the average pay for the CEOs listed is $14.42 million, most saw a decline from 2006 levels, underscoring the stock market challenges some biotechs faced in 2007. Take, for instance, Amgen CEO Kevin Sharer. Though he came out on top in this year's CEO pay ranking, Sharer's pay down 17 percent from 2006. His base salary was up slightly to $1.55 million but he took a hit on stock awards and incentive plan compensation. Arthur Levinson (Genentech), Henri Treemer (Genzyme), John Martin (Gilead) and James Mullen (Biogen Idec) round out the five highest paid Big Biotech execs.

Because companies each have their own approach to reporting CEO pay, FierceBiotech's CEO numbers are based on total compensation reported in these companies SEC filings. Total Compensation: $18.8 million

Details: Levinson declined a pay raise, keeping his base salary at $995K. He received $2.73 million in incentives and $9.77 million in stock option grants, bringing his total direct compensation to $13.9 million in 2007. His direct pay was $2.6 million lower than in 2006 due to the company's lower stock value in 2007.

Genentech CEO snags $14M in pay as shares swoon

Genentech CEO Arthur Levinson (photo) scooped up close to $14 million in compensation last year, even as its stock price slid in the face of slowing cancer therapy revenues. Levinson declined a raise, keeping his income under the million-dollar mark, and there was $2.7 million in bonuses for meeting his goals for the year. According to a review by the AP, Levinson also took home about $10 million in stock options and perks that included $97,375 for home security.

ALSO: Johnson & Johnson honcho Bill Weldon (photo) nabbed a 22 percent hike in compensation in 2007. Between base salary of $1.73 million, incentive pay of $9.19 million, plus stock awards and options and various miscellaneous perks, he raked in $25.1 million in compensation. Report
