Report: Pfizer 'exploited' children in African trial

The Nigerian government has accused Pfizer of improperly testing an experimental drug on children during a 1996 epidemic. According to The Washington Post, which obtained the confidential report, government investigators called Pfizer's actions a clear case of exploiting the ignorant. Pfizer had said that it journeyed to Nigeria because it wanted to help combat the epidemic. But investigators determined that the pharma giant left as soon as the trial was complete and long before the epidemic was over. The Pfizer drug, Trovan, had never been administered to children before. The Nigerian government has refused to make the report public and only a handful of copies existed. Pfizer said that it had conducted the trial in accordance with Nigerian law and with the full knowledge of the Nigerian government.
