Pfizer strikes deal for UK's PowderMed
Pfizer has struck a deal to buy the UK's PowderMed, a company that has been developing a new generation of DNA-based vaccines. No terms were disclosed. PowderMed has attracted attention for its needle-free technology for delivering DNA-based vaccines. PowderMed researchers blast the skin of patients with microscopic gold particles coated with the vaccine, an approach that allows for the cells in the skin to absorb the vaccine. The company has programs for seasonal flu as well as bird flu, which could trigger a human pandemic in the event of a viral mutation. For Pfizer, it's another sign that the giant drug developer is ready and willing to buy promising research as a way to propel new product development. This is their first effort in the vaccine field.
