New York gov pushing major stem cell program

New York's new governor, Eliot Spitzer, is pushing for a $2 billion, 10-year bond program to support research and development efforts in the state. And half of that would be funneled into stem cell research. If adopted, New York would leap from the back of the pack of states to the front tier alongside California and New Jersey. A new Stem Cell Commission would be created to oversee grants and enforce research guidelines.

Opponents, though, say they want to restrict all R&D funds to therapies relying on adult stem cells. If approved, the billion-dollar program would prove a major boon for a group of some of the most advanced academic research groups in the country.
