New research focuses on PD-1's role

The Wall Street Journal takes an in-depth look at new research into what causes the immune system to shut down and how scientists hope to switch it back on. Much of this new research focuses on the role of the PD-1 molecule that lies on the surface of T-cells. PD-1 is a natural regulator of the immune system and may be key to getting the body to rid itself of HIV, hepatitis C and cancer cells. But researchers are proceeding cautiously, with an eye on the disastrous drug trial in London that sent six volunteers to the hospital with organ failure.
