In other BIO-inspired announcements, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley unveiled plans for the Maryland Biotechnology Center, a one-stop shop to help the state's biotech industry. The shop will have two locations: The Shady Grove Life Sciences Park in Montgomery County and the World Trade Center in Baltimore. That befits a state where drug development is either clustered around Baltimore or the area closest to Washington, DC.

Word is that O'Malley will have more to say about the state's economic development plan for biotech when he arrives in Atlanta.

In Georgia, meanwhile, Emory University is planning a new drug discovery institute. The university is also partnering with Australia's Queensland Institute of Medical Research to develop new vaccines. And four organizations are creating an innovation center to help foster new medical devices.
