Glaxo bird flu vaccine spurs more questions

There's a great deal of second-day analysis coming out about GlaxoSmithKline's big news that it has a low-dose avian flu vaccine that has demonstrated 80 percent effectiveness. One of the big questions is which adjuvant the company is using to boost effectiveness. Glaxo isn't saying, other than to confirm that it's already in use. Researchers say they want to keep the particular vaccine/adjuvant mix they're using proprietary. The FDA has already made clear that they'll put any bird flu vaccine on a fast-track. And there's every indication that Glaxo will pursue approval later this year. Many of the world's vaccine experts, though, are staying distinctly cautious, noting that so far all they've heard about is a press release regarding blood tests. They'll want a lot more data, fast.
