Gates Foundation readies $258M for new malaria programs

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is donating $258 million to malaria research with $108 million going to vaccine development and $100 million for new drugs. Over the past six years, the Foundation has donated $230 million toward malaria. Six new drugs for the disease are now in clinical trials, up from zero five years ago. Drug developers are notoriously reluctant to develop new vaccines for third-world diseases that offer only small returns for expensive development programs.
