FDA expresses OTC Xenical doubts

An FDA expert committee will decide today whether GlaxoSmithKline's diet drug Xenical should be sold over-the-counter, but FDA staffers have expressed their doubts. Staffers say that some diabetics and other patients who should not take the drug still didn't understand the dangers after reading the drug label. Also, staffers noted that while the drug proved effective in promoting weight loss, people typically regained the weight after they stopped taking the drug. GSK bought the U.S. rights to Xenical last year.
