Avant cuts staff, biodefense work in restructuring

Avant ImmunoTherapeutics announced it is axing 30 percent of its workforce and shuttering its St. Louis research facility in a restructuring. R&D work is being concentrated in the company's Massachusetts operations as Avant works on developing a portfolio of viral and bacterial vaccines. Avant and Australia's Select Vaccines entered into a development partnership in February. Company officials say they are no longer funding biodefense work and are ending support for two development programs.
