AstraZeneca shares surge as lung cancer trial recruitment begins

Investors cheered AstraZeneca by bidding up its stock value upon the announcement that the company had begun recruiting patients for a pivotal trial of its experimental lung cancer drug AZD2171. The trial will focus on survival rates and response rates in patients suffering from advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. Earlier studies have indicated its success in inhibiting all three VEGF receptors involved in the growth of new blood cells. Researchers maintain that the therapy may be useful in other cancers and in combination with other drugs.
