Amylin obesity trial nets positive data

Shares of Amylin Pharmaceuticals surged after the drug developer announced that a mid-stage trial for its obesity drug pramlintide delivered positive data. Patients taking the drug in the 16-week trial lost between 8.4 and 13.4 pounds on average compared to 6.2 pounds for the placebo group. A total of 408 patients were enrolled and took part in diets, counseling and exercise programs. The pramlintide group lost the same amount of weight whether they were receiving two doses a day or three. Researchers have been studying the effect of the hormone amylin that plays a role in regulating appetite.
