Stem cells to heart parts in 5 years, researchers say

Scientist are looking into repairing damaged heart tissue with stem cells, but a group of scientists in Hong Kong and the United States are already thinking of the next (re)generation of stem cell science: growing spare heart parts from embryonic stem cells. Ronald Li, director of the University of Hong Kong's Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Consortium, tells Reuters that they can now make strips of muscle, but the next phase is to engineer it so that it mimics what goes on in specific parts of the heart. They're going to try to transplant muscle strips into pig's hearts first, then move on to humans. They predict it will all happen in the next 5 years. Story
