Cmed expanding in North Carolina as CRO-tech combos take off

Cmed is getting bigger. The U.K.-based provider of contract research and electronic clinical trials services to pharma companies is moving into a new office in Durham, NC, that offers nearly 50% more space than its previous facility there.

The expansion follows Cmed's move in 2011 into a larger office in New Providence, NJ, which is the other of the company's two U.S. locations. In Durham, the company has found 7,700 square feet in Creekstone Park, according to a press release. The new office features guest desks for mobile staff and visiting employees.

"This move not only gives our teams extra space to work it also positions us nicely for future growth," Mac McElroy, CEO of Cmed, U.S., said in a statement. "As we continue to see steady growth the new North Carolina office provides ample space to further expand our global operations."

Cmed has made electronic clinical trials technology central to its business, with a separate division called Cmed Technology. The division provides Timaeus, an on-demand platform that supports study design and other elements of trialing products. Parexel International is another CRO with an eClinical division.

Contract research outfits have turned to eClinical software and cloud computing to provide services efficiently, and more players in the CRO game have recently come to market with their own technology offerings. Quintiles, one of the largest CROs, has also helped drive revenue growth with tech products.
