Study finds alarming spread of MRSA
A new study suggests that as many as 5 percent of all hospital and nursing home patients are infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at any given time. According to a nationwide study conducted by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), there are an estimated 46 MRSA cases per 1,000 patients--significantly more widespread and established than previous estimated rates. As a result of this trend, antibacterial drugs--such as Pfizer's Zyvox and Wyeth's Zosyn--are being elevated to blockbuster status as this new generation of lethal hospital-based superbugs [1] prove resistant to standard therapies.
