Novartis [1] is building a $100 million research center in Shanghai, another example of the growing clout that China is demonstrating in the drug development industry. The 400,000-square-foot center will be Novartis' eighth R&D complex, employing some 400 scientists. Construction is set to begin the middle of next year. Analysts said that Novartis was lining up to take advantage of a lower-cost approach to developing new therapies.
