A group of nine insurers has been selected to offer a nationwide drug plan under the new Medicare Part D subsidy. In addition, a number of regional operators will also offer up their own versions of the program. As a result, seniors will have at least 11 plans to choose from, all from private insurers. In some areas, like New York, they will have 20 Part D programs from which to choose. Companies will be allowed to begin their promotional effort for the new drug benefit on October 1.
