Veterinary drugs draw scrutiny
The Washington Post reports on the FDA's slow response to complaints that the drug Deramaxx--which is closely related chemically to Vioxx--was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of dogs. And the report questions how the agency has handled a variety of complaints related to veterinary medicines. Several manufacturers, including Pfizer and Wyeth, have been accused of marketing risky therapeutics for pets. But in a country where pets are increasingly given special treatment, owners are less and less likely to shrug off adverse events.
