Metric: 4.4M children in US diagnosed with ADHD

Researchers analyzing government data have concluded that 4.4 million children age four to 17, 7.8 percent of the total, have been diagnosed with ADHD and more than half of them are being medicated for the condition. The report from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta noted that this is the first time there has been a careful estimate of the number of children on drugs for the disorder, which is characterized by an inability to pay attention and hyperactivity. Boys are two-and-a-half times as likely as girls to be diagnosed with ADHD, and children in families with health coverage are far more likely to have been diagnosed and treated.
